Nadal starts both his 2011 season and Abu Dhabi title-defence when he takes on either former Junior World Champion Marcos Baghdatis or World No 6 Tomas Berdych in the second semi-final on day two of the competition on Friday at the International Tennis Complex within Zayed Sport City.

“Last year, the most successful year of my career to date, started with a win in Abu Dhabi. So naturally it holds some great memories for me and I’d love to defend my title,” Nadal said.

“Already a lot has been talked about the season ahead but for me I just play one match and one tournament at a time. So right now my focus is on Abu Dhabi, being well prepared and giving my best. Whether it’s Baghdatis or Berdych in the semi-final, both are quality players and I’ll have the type of challenge I need ahead of the Australian Open. Abu Dhabi from the weather to the warm welcome from the fans is the perfect place to start my season.”

Nadal captured three Grand Slam titles in 2010 (French, British and US Open), won seven singles titles with a singles record of 71-10, while going undefeated in the clay court season with a perfect 22-0.

His first US Open win saw him become the youngest to have won all four Grand Slams, joining a list of just seven to have done so previously.

His season was only overshadowed by a knee injury which saw him pull out of the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and lose in the ATP Final to rival Roger Federer. He returns to Abu Dhabi for his third appearance, where he’s never failed to reach the final.
