 This definition from Google explains biomechanics in its simplest form. A better explanation would be something like this:

Biomechanics is the study of the ‘mechanics’ of the body. While we don’t think of humans as machines, in many ways, we actually perform a lot like them. The concepts used in basic mechanics can also be applied to the body. Biomechanics is a large field which covers many things like the mechanical function of muscles, connective tissue, cartilage, skin, nerves, bones and joints. Biomechanics research also includes research that is focused on human movement and performance where the internal and external forces that the body uses to produce movement are examined. By taking the laws of physics and engineering and applying them to the human body, we are able to explore the relationships between body movement and the prospective outcomes. For example, we can learn how to run faster, hit the a tennis ball harder or what may cause injury.

The Benefits of Biomechanics

Basically, it’s studying how the human body naturally wants to move, and applying that to sports. By understanding biomechanics we can teach people to move in a natural way that optimizes strength and stability. By moving in a way our body likes we can remove stress and pressure on the bones, joints, muscles and ligaments. Doing so, reduces the risk of injury. Makes sense right? Yeah I think so too.

Why Doesn’t Everyone Teach This?

The odds are that most tennis coaches and organizations don’t even know what biomechanics is. Or if they do, they don’t understand it and don’t want you to know about it. Because if you did you would demand they teach tennis with this in mind. This would require them to admit they are wrong and re-learn everything they have been taught. And that’s way too much effort. It’s a shame because the field of biomechanics is well understood and taught in other sports such as sprinting, swimming and even cricket.

I Learned the Hard Way so You Don’t Have to

I have had an unusual amount of injuries through my tennis career. Back, knees, achilles, shoulder, you name it and I’ve probably had surgery there. It’s a regret that I did not have this information during my professional tennis career. It would have saved me from so many injuries. Changing my technique and adopting the principles of biomechanics has allowed me to stay healthy, improve my game, and continue to compete on the champions tour. If biomechanics has great benefits for a grandfather like me, imagine the potential it has to help the players of today.

I hope this post has given you a better understanding of what biomechanics is and why it is so important to tennis. In the coming weeks I will write about specific techniques, do in depth analysis, and give you biomechanically proven step-by-step guides on how to improve your shots.

Last summer I went on holiday to Paris, the capital city of France. I went with my family (my five sisters, two brothers, my mother and my daughter). Throughout the holiday it was sunny, apart from on Sunday when it rained all day, what a pity! Despite the weather I enjoyed the holiday because we went skiing, dancing; we played tennis and also football. I don’t like football because I’m not good at it, but my sisters enjoyed it, they’re better at sports than me. One day we went to the top of the Eiffel Tower, the view was astonishing. In the evening we went to dinner, the food was fantastic even though the quality of service was pathetic. At night we watched a movie at the cinema, it was called “The Orphanage”, it was a Spanish horror movie. I prefer horror movies because they are exciting, they are much better than romantic movies, they are boring.

I am going to go to Paris again next summer. I’d like to visit the Eiffel Tower again because it was great – the icon of the country! Next year I am going to Costa Rica with my sister, she is learning Spanish. I’d also like to visit Italy, Spain, Poland and Romania in the future.

Not only are their racquets top of the line, the strings they use are also top-notch. Technology has come a long way and tennis rackets now are lighter, stronger, and more powerful. Choosing a racket is similar to Harry Potter choosing a magic wand – it needs to feel right. You’re not going to find “the one” your first time around.

Therefore, its essential to try your friends racquets, try various brands, and different string tensions. Stiffer tennis rackets and tighter strings offer more control but less power. Softer racquets and lower tensions will give you more power, but lack of control. Find the right combination for your game style and stick with it. I personally like to buy three of the same rackets, all using the same string, I just use normal synthetic gut, and tension.

Getting Your Basics Right

While most people start by buying a racquet, a couple tennis balls, and start hitting, professional guidance is essential to get the right strokes (forehand, backhand, volleys, service). Get professional advice early. You don’t want to start with incorrect strokes and have to correct it in the future. It’s like changing bad habits, it’s always best to start out right.

Correct form will lead to correct footstep which is essential! You don’t need to take tennis lessons everyday, however, once a week would be enough with lots of side practice. During your lesson, which should be at least 2 hours, ask questions. I’ve seen too many students not using their heads when they play. Tennis is half technical, and half brains. Take tennis like a course in school, ask questions, take mental notes, and think about it in your dreams.

Practice Is Not The Key

I know this is contradictory to popular belief that practice makes perfect, but practice is not the most important factor in winning. It’s true that some people are naturally more athletic, and yes, it does offer its advantages, however, getting the perfect forehand, or getting a 150 mph serve is actually not the most important.

I believe that once you have a good foundation of basic skills, it’s all about using your head to play. When I was young, all I cared about is running around, getting to the ball, and hitting back to the other side of the court. I never really thought about how to force errors to my opponents. That’s probably why I never turned professional. It seems my opponents were the ones holding my nose and making me run around the court chasing after the little, green, fury ball.

It’s All About Placement & Variation

While it helps to slam the ball back at your opponent, it’s more important where you slam it to. That is, when your opponent is in the middle, you always want to hit down the line. When your opponent is on the line, aim for the other line. If you think you’ve hit a winning shot, run to the net and get ready to volley a winner. The game of tennis is simply forcing your opponent to miss. I see it as playing football, every time you serve the ball, or receiving a serve, you should have a game plan with possible scenarios and outcomes.

Sometimes, I feel practicing with friends actually hurts my game play since I’m always hitting back to my opponent in the middle of the court. Where in fact, I should be practicing deep shots down the line or going cross court. After 2 consecutive straight hard hits, put in a soft deep shot to change the pace. Slice a short shot near the net forcing your opponent to volley. The more you’re able to vary your game and push your opponent around the court, the higher the chance you’ll win. This is why when practicing with friends, I always opt to at least play a short, one set game. This way, I don’t feel bad about making my friends run in circles around tennis court.

The Mental Player

Lastly, tennis is a mental game because real games last 2-3 hours, possibly in the sun and heat. It’s tiring, there’s probably sweat dripping, and your t-shirt is completely soaked. The sun is blazing and it’s blocking your vision when you serve. At this time, just relax and remember your fundamental ground strokes and forcing your opponent to give up. It’s like playing chicken, you can’t, and don’t want to be the chicken!

In the end, winning or losing is not the major issue. What matters is why you’ve won or why you’ve lost. Based on what you’ve learned, think about how can you become even better at the game. So people lose a game and think the world is over, it’s not. Losing means you have room to improve. Winning means you have even more room to improve and get ready for the next match, which may be a higher ranked player.

Lastly, you should not let competition get in the way of having fun. Tennis is a competitive sport, but, the more you turn this into a job, the more you will not improve. Instead, have fun and you’ll be at a whole new level.
