Improve your Tennis Game and Keep Fit

Tennis is a game enjoyed by millions but yet there is an element of the game that seems to be missing amongst the majority of its participants, despite being such a global pastime.  This aspect is the use of the tennis ball machine.  Whether because of costs, availability, logistics, or just pure unawareness, millions of tennis players will never have the chance of taking advantage of the benefits of a ball machine.

Starting with this first article I will be sharing my own personal experience of the additional benefits of using a tennis machine aside from its intended purpose of improving your strokes. Tennis machines keep you fit!
Even before you hit the courts, you’re typically lifting a 30lb machine and another 20lb basket of balls in and out of the trunk of your car.  Your pre-pre-workout continues as you carry all of your equipment, plus your 10lb tennis bag, and 2lb water cooler to courtside.


Once you get going hitting against the ball machine…after you’ve properly stretched of course….those calories start to burn as you’re continually moving your feet ensuring they aren’t planted, swinging away at the balls coming at you around 70Mph.  Balls which by the way, tend to be a little heavier than regular balls if you use the pressure-less ones.  After hitting 100 balls and not even breaking a sweat, you now have to pick-up all of those balls. For every one you’re collecting, you’re lifting the hopper as it gradually gets heavier and heavier.  That’s at least 50 biceps, or half the amount of balls you began with tennisballmachineassuming you didn’t spray them all over the court. This is a workout by itself and after just picking up the first hopper’s worth, your t-shirt is holding more moisture than the water cooler you brought!


After going through another 2 hoppers worth/~200 balls, you decide to turn on the oscillation feature, which then spreads the ball randomly across the court.  You’re heart rate has now possibly doubled just due to the running needed to get yourself properly positioned to hit the next ball.  Swing after swing, you’re working on your arms, legs, and torso.  After going through 6 hoppers/~600 balls since starting, and possibly 1 hr that seemed like an eternity, you’ve decided to call it a day.


You’re spent, thirsty, and your body is telling you already that tomorrow is going to be one of those must ‘call in sick’ days, and you’re ready to take a nap on the bench.  The only problem is that you were ‘gently’ reminded by the other players waiting outside the fence that you’re on a public court.  You have just enough energy to rummage through your tennis bag to find your car keys…and you were just reminded that you still have to lug about 60lbs of equipment back to your car which is at least 50 yards away.


What a workout!  Who needs a gym membership when you’ve got a ball machine to use!  But hey, did you also know that ball machines were good for your tennis game as well?


Areas Of One’s Game That Are Critical In Tennis

As tennis continues to grow its fans and players will always be arguing on what determines a good player and which skills are the most important to have.

There are arguments that can be made for a handful of different elements of the sport, and while it may all boil down to a matter of opinion, it’s still fun to look at the possibilities.

What about volleying?

A game that it going too smoothly can become a disadvantage for opponents as points may easily be lost. Just take a look back at players of the past such as John McEnroe.

You will hardly ever see either of these two stars become flustered or overexcited. They have the mental focus to remain composed throughout the game.

The Essential Tennis Equipment

When it comes to tennis equipment you will find that there are some things that are a lot more important than others.


No matter if you play professionally or just for fun you will need to make sure that you have the right type of equipment so that you will be able to play the game in a way that is going to be beneficial to your game while still being fun. People that do not get the right equipment for themselves will only end up suffering and therefore not having as much fun as they should.

Know whether you will be playing on a grass court or a hard court as there are different tennis balls for both. Getting tennis balls for a hard court when you are on a grass court will definitely make it harder to play.

The same goes for tennis balls meant for a grass court when you are playing on a hard court. Get the right tennis ball for the right situation.



Tennis clothing is actually very important when it comes to tennis. Many people think that it is usually just about fashion and coordinating colors. This is not true at all. You want clothing that is going to breath well and allow you to move and run without worry about not being comfortable.


The same can be said for your shoes that you get. You want shoes that will allow you to stop on a dime as you will need to be able to whenever you are running to hit the ball. Whenever your clothing is not made for tennis it will greatly affect your game.



What is the right grip for me?

Everybody who has watched a few games of tennis knows that it is a game of inches , or less in the case of the pros. If a ball is not in by the smallest of margins it is out by the smallest of margins . If a pro has an easier shot they go for the lines, no less .


When playing a game that is won or lost on the smallest influences you need to have your equipment working at it’s peak performance . It is surprising how much harder it is to play with a grip size that is not right for you . For example when trying a new tennis racquet and the grip size is smaller than you usually use , you will wonder how anyone could play with it. .


When using a grip that is too small you shall find yourself squeezing the racquet really tight to stop it from spinning . To play your best tennis it is important that your grip is relaxed , not too tense. When the grip is too small it is very hard to have a relaxed grip . When the grip is too large it is more difficult to make quick grip adjustments , it is harder to impart spin and snap on a serve. A grip too large or too small will increase chances of tennis elbow.


A simple way to test your correct grip size is hold your tennis racquet using the continental grip , your finger tips will wrap all the way to your palm. If the grip is correct you should be able to fit the index finger of your other hand in between the palm and your finger tips . If yougrip can fit the index finger and another figure in as well you can be sure you need a smaller grip . If you cannot fit the index finger in between the grip needs to be larger  .



Nowadays an over grip can bulk up a grip that is too small and you can get excellent textures on them as well. For example there are super absorbent, tacky grips, grooved grips all are very good at absorbing sweat and keeping the grip slightly sticky so the racquet doesn’t move about unnecessarily  .

The Volley

If you want to make a real success of your grass court game, you are going to have to come to the net at times or risk being beaten by someone with greater killer instinct. The approach to the net is all important in grass court tennis – and to a lesser extent on other services – because if you can hit a good volley, you will win a lot of free points if you get to the net.


A volley is any shot that is played before the ball bounces on your side of the net. Serve-volley tennis, a major component in most successful grass court games, entails hitting your serve and then approaching the net to volley away any return. It is particularly deadly on grass because any well-judged volley will bounce so low as to be impossible for the opponent to reach.


Many people feel that a volley is only as good as the player’s approach to the net to make it. If you can volley well, but come to the net at the wrong time – because for example your opponent hits returns well and has the measure of your serve – then you will be passed by your opponent. If on the other hand you judge the approach right, you will have easier volley opportunities.


Among the best volleyers in the history of the men’s game, John McEnroe was considered to have the best pure volley while Sweden’s Stefan Edberg was believed to have the best combination of approach and volley.

The Tennis Serve

In terms of the rules of tennis, the serve is a shot which has one function – to start a point by putting the ball in play. It is simply intended to commence a rally, all things being equal, but in recent times it has become a whole lot more important than that. These days, a particularly good serve can win you matches almost on its own – although players who can serve and do little else are still unlikely to win many titles.


Because of the way it is played – the ball is almost always struck overarm, from a ball thrown into the air by the player whose turn it is to serve – it tends to be the fastest shot played in any rally. A player with a particularly fast serve, or one who has pinpoint accuracy, can win points without their opponent even getting a racket to the ball. When a serve wins a point without being touched by the opponent, it is referred to as an “ace”.


Some of the greatest exponents of the serve have been the Croatian Goran Ivanisevic, Britain’s Greg Rusedski and the man with the three fastest serves recorded in men’s tennis, Andy Roddick, who holds the world record with a service of 155mph. The fastest women’s serve ever recorded came from Brenda Schulz McCarthy, who hit one of 130mph in 2006. there are many people who view the growing speed of tennis serves as detrimental to the game, as it prevents long rallies – but others who view it as an awesome display of raw power.
