About Tony and Kathy
Hi …just a little bit about Tony and Kathy.
I grew up in South Africa part of a sporty family where my father was a county table tennis player and first division tennis player and my mother was a champion sprinter and county badminton player…..so sport was in my genes !
I started playing tennis when I was 6 years old and represented my county….. the Cape Province ….. throughout all the junior division age groups. At under 18 I was ranked in the top five junior tennis players in South Africa. At age 18 I did my two years national service in the South African Navy where I was number 1 player.
Alongside my tennis career I pursued a career as a Television Cameraman in TV Production, starting at the South African Broadcasting Corporation and I still work as a TV cameraman today with the BBC, SKY, RTE and ITV.
I continued to play first division tennis for various sports clubs as well as first division squash and maintained a low golf handicap. In 2001 I relocated with my Irish wife Kathy and two daughters from South Africa to Northern Ireland.
Since then I have represented Northern Ireland in Inter Counties tennis and also Ireland at ITF Veterans Tennis in age categories from over 35 to present over 55. Currently I am the Irish number 1 in the over 55 age group.
I reached number 43 in the World over 50 rankings in 2013 and have also represented Ireland Veterans in the over 55 age category at the ITF tournament in France in June 2015 and Helsinki 2016
As you can see tennis has always been a large part of my life and will continue to be a large part in the future and that is mainly my reason for starting a Tennis Holiday business in Spain.
Kathy is also a tennis player who has played league over the years and has always enjoyed the social side of tennis. Working over the last number of years as a health sciences Lecturer has given us opportunities to travel and educate our daughters’ in Spain.
Kathy grew up in East Africa and attended boarding school and University in Northern Ireland before moving to South Africa in the early 80’s. No surprise then that we met at a tennis club in Cape Town !
Whereas I take responsibility for the tennis side of the business, Kathy does the marketing and the online blog for tennisinspainblog.com
Spain and especially the Costa del Sol is a great place to play tennis. The weather is always good, there is plenty of sunshine and the people are very friendly. Most areas have tennis clubs with a range of abilities and a selection of nationalities that make many clubs good for socializing.
Many people play tennis along the Costa Del Sol and if you are a social player or a higher level player, I can guarantee there will always be someone to play with.
Tony is a Professional Tennis coach and is available for coaching at any club of your choice on the Costa Del Sol
